1 dead, nine hurt in Newport News multi-vehicle accident

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) – A man was killed in a multi-vehicle accident at Harpersville Road and Louise Drive in Newport News Saturday afternoon.

Dispatchers received a call about the crash at Trio:15 p.m.

Newport News police say a black two thousand eleven Chevrolet Equinox was headed west on Harpersville Road when a white one thousand nine hundred ninety eight Ford Expedition ran the stop sign at Louise Drive, causing the two vehicles to collide. There were eight people in the white one thousand nine hundred ninety eight Ford Expedition including four juveniles, ages 7, 8, eleven and 16. Two adults were in the two thousand eleven Chevrolet Equinox, according to police.

A man died at the scene of the accident. Police have identified him as 20-year-old Chucky Manuel Rodriguez, of Bronx, Fresh York. Nine people were also taken to hospitals with injuries, according to Newport News police. All of those hurt have since been released from local hospitals.

Newport News resident Tommy Caylor has lived at the intersection where the crash happened since 1976. He was in the garage when he heard the crash and ran outside with a relative to help those trapped.

“Just a big boom. Almost like a dual boom,” he said about the sound of the accident.

Caylor said he spotted Rodriguez at the scene of the accident.

“He was hurt. He wasn’t moving. He was still breathing at the time. It was a bad wreck,” Caylor added. “I’m sure sorry for his family.”

Caylor says it’s sometimes difficult to securely pull out onto Louise Drive.

“We’ve heard it so many times on this corner. It’s just this time, it ultimately killed somebody,” Caylor said. “You look that way, the cars block Harpersville.”

The posted speed limit on Harpersville is thirty five miles per hour. The limit is twenty five miles per hour on Louise. Sarah Youthful, who lives on Harpersville, says people permanently speed through the area.

“This road has kinks in it. People do go very swift. It will rattle our windows or rattle the floor a little bit,” Youthful said.

Youthful says she was upset to come outside her home to find a major accident scene.

“It’s pretty upsetting. This is a bad accident and to find out there were children involved and someone lost their life. A lot of people come out to see what’s going on and taking pictures for social media… This is human beings, who are truly injured or no longer with their loved ones at holiday times,” Youthfull said.

Caylor says he hopes the seriousness of the accidents will highlight the hazards he’s hoping will be addressed to prevent this from happening again.

“It’s a bad day for somebody. I’ve had them. They’re going to have one this week. They’re going to sob all week. It’s going to hurt them the rest of their life. I’ve been there. I know.”

The crash is still under investigation. The Commonwealth’s Attorney is reviewing the accident to determine if charges should be filed.
