S-Cross Review
Maruti Suzuki has introduced their latest crossover SUV – the S-Cross. Maruti has began challenging in this segment almost three years after the Renault Duster kicked up the dust for the very first time with a modern compact SUV. The S-Cross is a product out of Suzuki’s global portfolio and has made its debut in the Indian subcontinent.
With a length of Four,300mm, the S-Cross is big enough for a compact SUV, but overall proportions are such that it looks more like a large hatchback. The similarities to the SX4 sedan are pretty evident tho’ this crossover looks a lot more premium. The big headlamps predominate the front, along with the chrome grille. Certain elements like the silver front bash plate, chiselled bumper and roof rails give the S-Cross a rugged look. The side profile is the chink in the armour; it isn’t tall enough to be called a crossover and the ground clearance of 180mm doesn’t look incredible either.
Maruti has put in a lot of effort to make the S-Cross interior look premium. It gets the all-black treatment in line with its sporty photo. The top-spec versions have slew of features like push-button embark, cruise control, touch-screen music system, navigation, leather seats, auto headlamps, switch sides parking camera and sensors. The only bits missing from the S-Cross when compared to its competitors are the rear AC vents and the charging point at the back. The S-Cross can cosily fit four people and the third person on the rear bench is bit of a squeeze due to the width and also the transmission tunnel. The boot too isn’t large enough at three hundred fifty three litres, tho’ it can be expanded to eight hundred ten litres after folding the rear seats.
Maruti offers the S-Cross with the choice of two diesel engines. The 1.3-litre turbocharged DDiS two hundred with the power rating of 90bhp and 200Nm is similar to one on the Ciaz and Ertiga with a five-speed manual powering the front wheels. Suzuki is also introducing the 1.6-litre turbocharged DDiS three hundred twenty with this car, which is tuned to produce 120bhp and 320Nm of torque. The imported Fiat engine comes mated to the six-speed manual transmission. The ARAI rated fuel efficiency of the 1.3-litre and 1.6-litre is 23.65kmpl and 22.70kmpl respectively.
The S-Cross is available through Maruti Suzuki’s fresh premium showroom brand Nexa. The crossover will be available in five colours – urban blue, caffeine brown, granite grey, premium silver and pearl arctic white. The S-Cross competes with the Renault Duster, Hyundai Creta and Nissan Terrano in the compact SUV segment.
