Iredell Co. guys carjacked after Facebook Live shooting in Myrtle Beach

IREDELL COUNTY, N.C. – Two Iredell County studs said they are fortunate to be alive after getting caught in the line of fire during last weekend’s shooting on Ocean Boulevard in Myrtle Beach.

All Quentin Vanderburg wished to do was eat a cheeseburger.

The very first cheeseburger he ordered had onions on it.

After sending the burger back, the next one he received was raw.

Once again, he sent the burger back.

“The cashier was like, ‘This is just a bad night for you,`” Vanderburg said. “‘You got bad luck.'”

Minutes later, with his third burger in the car, Vanderburg and his friend were ordered out at gunpoint.

“I was just at the wrong place at the wrong time,” Vanderburg said.

Vanderburg and his friend, Rackim Mattox, were in the parking lot of their Myrtle Beach hotel when a fight broke out. They were in Myrtle Beach to feast Vanderburg’s bday and Father’s Day.

The fight has been seen by millions on Facebook Live. A gunman opened fire injuring seven, including himself.

After the gunshots, the suspect approached Vanderburg and ordered them out of their rental Toyota Corolla.

“In the movie, it looked like I got out of there like Deion Sanders, but when I’m in act it felt like slow movement,” Vanderburg said.

“The only clever option was to get out of there,” Mattox said. “Things happen everywhere you go, but I didn’t think it would happen to me.”

Mattox said he isn’t in a hurry to go back to Myrtle Beach. Vanderburg said he isn’t going to let the shooting intimidate him and is going to come back to the beach resort during the Fourth of July weekend.

“I’m blessed I can still say I’m here to see 30,” Vanderburg said.

The suspected shooter is a 17-year-old from North Carolina and allegedly involved in a gang, police said. Officials have not released the teenage’s name.

Mattox told Channel nine that he was in a rental car in a parking lot on Ocean Boulevard when the suspected gunman carjacked him.

Mattox and Vanderburg were unharmed.
