A speeding car switching lanes on North Lake Shore Drive crossed the median and smashed into three other vehicles Monday evening, killing the driver of the car and injuring seven other people, including two children, authorities said.
“It was indeed crazy and horrific. It almost looked as if one of the cars flew,” said Gabriel Charles Tyler, 26, who was headed to dinner with a friend. “It became a domino effect in all three of the lanes.
“Boom. Boom. Boom. Bam. … It indeed happened in a blink of an eye.”
The crash happened south of Lawrence Avenue shortly before six p.m. as a woman driving a Chevrolet attempted to switch lanes, police said. “Preliminary information indicates speed to be a factor,” police said in a statement.
The woman was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead, according to police.
Seven other people were injured, according to fire officials. Two people in serious-to-critical condition were taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center; one person in serious-to-critical condition went to Presence St. Francis Hospital in Evanston; two children in fair-to-serious condition were taken to Lurie Children’s Hospital; one person in fair-to-serious condition was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital; and one person suffered injuries and declined to be taken to a hospital.

Two of the vehicles sustained significant harm, with debris splashed across the road. A tire ended up about seventy five yards north of the crash in the northbound lanes. Lanes in both directions were closed for more than three hours while crews dealt with the injured and police investigated.
Tyler said it appeared a vehicle swerved and clipped another car, resulting in a pile-up. In a matter of seconds, people traveling in both directions began to get out of their cars to check on those in the mangled vehicles, including a person who appeared to be trapped in a badly bruised silver sedan.
“I heard weeping and witnessed people all running toward the indeed, indeed smashed car that one person was trapped inwards,” said Tyler, who lives in Hyde Park. “That one got the brunt of the harm. All the people running toward that one, like, ‘Someone needs to help them out.’ It looked like someone got crushed.”
In a movie taken by Tyler, a bystander appeared to be performing chest compressions on a person lounging in the front seat of a dark-colored sedan with its fetish mask smashed.
At least two children, noticeablely rattled by the crash, emerged from a blue SUV that had minor harm on its front end, Tyler said. “It looked like their father was holding them to convenience them.”
