Two brothers killed in North Kingstown wrong-way crash

NORTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (WPRI) – Police are investigating a deadly overnight crash that killed two and left three others injured.

Officials say the crash happened at the intersection of Route four and West Allenton Road in North Kingstown around 11:20 p.m. Saturday. Police said a preliminary investigation exposed a car traveling southbound on Route four swerved into the northbound lane and was struck by another vehicle.

Two boys railing in the car that swerved were killed, police said. A passenger in the backseat of the same vehicle was hurt and was in serious condition at Rhode Island Hospital at last check, police said.

Family members have identified the victims as 25-year-old Stephen Dutra and 19-year-old Juwuan Hills. The two were brothers, according to family members.

Eyewitness News spoke with Krystal Dutra, Stephen’s sister. She said losing her brother will be one of the most difficult things in her life.

“This is very likely going to be the hardest day of my life. I mean how do you lose a brother and just keep going?” she asked. “He had a truly big heart. He most likely had the thickest heart I’ve ever seen in my life.”

Stephen lived in Woonsocket and had two daughters – ages seven and Two.

“He was the best big brother in the world. He never dreamed to see me in any anguish. He was always there for me,” she said. “Always ready to hop in front of me – take whatever was coming.”

And according to Dutra, that is exactly what Stephen attempted to do in the crash. She said police told her Juwuan was driving and Stephen threw himself over him in the crash – attempting to protect him.

The family said Stephen died at the scene and Juwuan died later at the hospital.

“I just wish he was back here with us,” Dutra said.

The two passengers in the car traveling north were hurt but are expect to get through, police said.

Stephen’s family has set up a GoFundMe.com page to help pay for his funeral. Click here to donate.
