Officials said a Hagerstown man suspected of crashing a stolen car at an unmanned gate at Fort Meade was arrested Thursday morning after hiding from police on base through the night.

The search for the suspect coerced those living on Fort Meade to remain in their homes, prompted diminished operations at the installation and led Anne Arundel County to close six schools for the day.

Around 8:45 p.m. Wednesday, Anne Arundel County police officers were in the Hanover area when they spotted a vehicle driven by forty one year old Dante Petite that had been reported stolen in an armed robbery in Baltimore.

«At a very high rate of speed, the suspect drove through the Access Control Point (ACP) at Rockenbach Road, followed closely by an Anne Arundel County Police squad,» Fort Meade Garrison Commander Colonel Brian Foleysaid. «He then proceeded on Rockenbach Road until he crashed into a secure fence line inwards the installation.»

Officers attempted to stop make a traffic stop and pursued the vehicle for about Four.Five miles. In the area of Rockenbach Road, the driver lost control and crashed the car at a fence leading to Fort Meade property, police said.

Police spokesman Lt. Glenn Shanahan said the driver ran onto the base and disappeared into the trees. Officials said he hid in a storm drain across the night.

The suspect was ultimately taken into custody some time before Ten:45 a.m. Thursday. Just before eleven a.m., officials in the public affairs office at Fort Meade announced operations had returned to normal.

“No one was hurt and the suspect was taken into custody without incident,” the release stated.

UPDATE Subject from last nights incident is in custody. He was located attempting to hide in the forest in the area.

«We have been working diligently over the years, to improve all of our ACPs. Ironically, we broke ground on improvements to the Rockenbach ACP in June of this year and appreciate the cooperation we`ve had from our state and federal fucking partners to ensure we have the funding available to make the installation as secure as possible,” Foley said of how Petite managed to make it so far onto the base.

Anne Arundel officers and Fort Meade Police were involved in the search, which utilized both air support and police dogs on the ground.

While the suspect was at large, Fort Meade officials posted a message on Facebook asking residents to report suspicious activity.

Early Thursday morning, Anne Arundel County School officials determined to close six schools due to the situation: Meade High School, Meade Middle School, Macarthur Middle School, Manor View Elementary School, Pershing Hill Elementary School, and the West Meade Early Education Center.

AACPS: Due to police activity, following schools closed today: Meade HS, Meade MS, Macarthur MS, M. View ES, P. Hill ES, West Meade EEC.

To help police in the search for the suspect, Fort Meade officials announced Thursday morning that only mission essential personnel should report and residents should remain indoors.

«We made the assumption that the suspect was armed and dangerous albeit no weapon was found when he was apprehended,» Foley said. «The physical security of the installation has always received my highest level of attention. We`re glad this incident was brought to a close peacefully and without injury.»

It’s believed the incident spawned from an armed robbery in Baltimore City during which three guys approached a man in the four hundred block of Grindall Street and demanded his keys. According to an incident report, one of the three suspects asked the man, “what you got in your pockets?” while pointing a handgun.

The man provided his car keys to the suspects and his two thousand eight Silver Acura TSX was later reported stolen.

Baltimore Police spokesman detective Jeremy Silbert added, “The person taken into custody at Fort Meade is presently being treated for his injuries at an area hospital. The person has not been charged at this time and the investigation proceeds into this incident.”
